Hello everyone. This is the first essay of several that I have planned on The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy M Boston, and this first essay I shall publish in three parts over the next couple of weeks. I will save the others for later in the year. (Feel free to unsubscribe if this thought horrifies you!). If you have never read this book, or if you haven’t read it since childhood, I hope that you will still enjoy my exploration of this novel. And I hope you will consider reading it, or rereading it. This isn’t (just) a children’s book!

(And a warning: this post/newsletter ends on a heavy note. Next week’s will be more cheerful.)

The beautiful 70th anniversary edition of The Children of Green Knowe, published by Faber in 2025
